First off I want to thank you for taking the time out to do this interview with ReverseNation. For those who don’t know who you are go ahead and let them know.
“Thank you for having me. I’m Jayy Starr, a songwriter/lyricist/actress from South Central Los Angeles. Here to spread Euphoria through music!”
How were you introduced in to making music?
“I’ve literally been around it all my life. My grandmother used to have me sing with her at church and put me in school choirs, the whole nine. I loved it. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized this is what I was put on this earth to do.”
Who are some of the people who influence your sound?
“My environment is number one. The voices in my head (laughs), nah, but seriously Da brat, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Ludacris.”
Now I had read that you are versatile with your beat selection and lyricism, to you why is that an important factor in music?
“I think in order to have longevity in this industry you need to be open and able to display your skill over anything. I love being able to create something conscious one minute and that same day come up with a top 40 or EDM record. As a writer, things like that just come easy to me.”
What was it like working with Multi-Platinum producers LT Moe and Chris “Traxx” Rogers?
“Surreal. I mean I started out downloading beats from Soundclick with tags all through them thinking I was doing something (laughs). To be able to go from that to flying to the other side of the country to work one on one, from scratch, with dudes that have sold millions of records is a blessing. At that moment I knew my hard work was not in vain. Not to mention they gave me some game too. So it was great.”
I want to get a little into “Digitized Euphoria” which was your most recent project released, how did that name come about?
“I’m into weird s*** (laughs). I thought long and hard about it and I wanted to create a project that was fun, real and made people happy. My mission was to spread joy digitally through music. Since it was released “digitally” I came up with “Digitized Euphoria”. Digital Happiness.”
What statement did that project make for you as a rising force?
“That I could take any style of music and rip it! I believe that project was my first that had an album feel to it. It surprised a lot of my fans.”
Did you receive a lot of positive criticism and feedback on “Digitized Euphoria”?
“Yeah I did. It received the most positive feedback out of all of my projects. Til this day I still get people talking about it, but I’m like, just wait til I drop my next project (laughs).”
Now you are the self proclaimed “Demi-Goddess”, at what point of time did you give yourself that title and why?
“I’ve always been a fan of Greek mythology. I’ve always thought I was a Demigod my whole life (laughs), but it wasn’t until late 2012 when I started really pushing that as a brand. People that know me know I have a plethora of alter egos/personas because I’m a Gemini (laughs), but this one seemed to stick and it wasn’t my choice. Once I put it out there my fans took it and made it official. They f*** with it.”
What exclusive info can you share with us on your plans for 2014 lol
“New single coming 2014! I’ll also be dropping another full length project in Spring. Some records featuring some of the hottest artists indie and major! I’m hosting an independent mixtape for artists on the come up, look out for that. They got some heat! A movie I had a cameo role in will be premiering. Lots of videos and big business man, just stay tuned. I’m just getting started.”
